Hi Friends.
A few weeks back, I realized I hadn’t yet been outside all day. It early evening and it was getting dark, but the sudden need to move was clear. These vampire days where I’m inside most of the daylight hours are usually ones where I’m sunk into the work, so the trade off is usually a good one, progress over vitamin D. It’s often not till I look up and see the sun sinking (and as usually, the dog staring me down for a walk) that I realize I haven’t breathed outside air for 24 hours. My December and January have been full of days like this. On this day I headed to the local park, and saw these guys/friends/beasts in the fence of the construction site. There be monsters, I thought.
In theory monsters should be—are?—terrifying, but alone in the near darkness, each one only made me laugh harder. They were so goofy and endearing, like children playing at being scary, being bigger than we both knew they were. They called me to my friend, the poet KC Trommer, who is also a collagist. I have one of her monster collages on my bookshelf next to my writing desk. I sent KC photo after photo as I walked the line of fences, knowing she’d appreciate them. She replied:
“once you see the monsters, they stay with you”
