In Process: Where to Begin
A tale of sand on my desk, how to think about structure and sequencing, + a little gift guide for the writing inclined
Hi Friends.
Welcome back to In Process. This week, I’ll share what I’m working on, how it’s going, and talk about why sequencing is an essential early decision to telling any story. I also made you a little essentials of writing not-exactly-a-gift-guide should you want to know what material objects might make for good gifts for creative people in your life.
Just this morning I read two really great posts on writing, and wanted to share with you (maybe I will throw links into my paid posts above the paywall? Perhaps! Maybe I’ll forget by next time!):
- on the barrage of Make It Big On Substack! content and accompanying writerly expectations and most of all putting in the work. Great for those of you who feel bad when you look at other writers’ numbers in any manner (followers, awards, book deals, whatever) and perhaps those of you who are trying to understand what Substack is for writers. Read the post here on (a Substack I love, for what it’s worth).
- on the adaptations she’s used to write five books as someone with ADHD. Many of these are of course really good strategies for getting work done regardless of whether this is diagnostically you (though you might be one of the many people in the comments wondering if this is indeed you), just smart strategies for when the ones you’ve already tried to get work done aren’t working. You’ll also find part 1 here if that interests you.
