Quick plug here: If you’re having a summer of writing, or want to be, might I suggest you enroll in Writing Co-Lab’s Summer Camp, for which I’ll be on a panel in later July? Truly, there should be more camps for adults!
I’m in the summer gig, and it is full days in a classroom, and yet I will not lie about the fun things that have happened this season. I’ve toured the New York Times building twice already (the program I work for is affiliated; the next two times, coming up, might seem a touch less exciting). I finally went to a bar I’ve been trying to go to forever—I try not to gatekeep things, but yeah, you can find out which one below the paywall —and it might be my new favorite, and there I learned what a boomerang is, and got to taste one (that’s how awesome the bartenders are). I’m buying new summer dresses I can wear in front of teenagers. I’ve been to the gelato shop a lot. With my future classes, I’ll be at the Whitney (twice!) and will have my ticket covered for the Amy Sherald exhibition I really want to see. Zohran Mamdani is the democratic candidate for NYC mayor, and wow, does it feel good to see a candidate who motivates and surprises voters (and a certain zombie of a former governor I never wish to see on my ballot again). My body is tired but there is a fullness to the days I appreciate the rhythms and variations of.
Last year, before I started this same summer gig, I willingly put my book aside. This year I convinced myself to at least try not to do that. To get a writing session or two in a week.
