Hello! I have a fan blowing directly on my face, my animals are slumped on various surfaces (cat lounger, the carpet in the kids’ well-air conditioned room), my kids are done with school, one of them done with high school forever (!) and while usually I’d be here with a rumination about this threshold we’re all stepping through with our mess of feelings (pride, elation, anxiety) I’m very much head-in-the-novel-edits and all my writing energy is going there, so this run-on sentence is it for today.
But I do want to share two fall offerings that just went live should you want to work with me this fall. And as I’m not doing my regular summer j-o-b, my books are open for reads and coaching right now should you want to work together this summer (and help put a dent in tuition bills).
MFA Coaching Cohort
This cohort is a supportive, structured group focused on navigating the application process with as much confidence and as little stress as possible. Together, we’ll walk through choosing programs, selecting samples, soliciting recommendations, writing a compelling personal statement, and staying on track through deadlines so that you have the best chance for admission this season. Whether you’re applying in prose or poetry, for a full-time program or a low-residency one, working in cohort provides opportunity for accountability, commiseration, and motivation during what can be an overwhelming and lonely process.
We’ll meet for six sessions over twelve weeks starting September 10th. Reads of your samples (for prose) and statements are available as add ons. More information is available here.
Time and Perspective in the Short Story
Very excited to be part of an all-star team of short story writers for Writing Co-Lab’s 5 Authors on Story Craft. You can take the series as a whole if you want a start to finish course on short story writing, or pick the sessions that feel most needed for you right now. Mine is on Time and Perspective, which, yes, are my two favorite elements of short stories to play with. The series starts September 9th, with my single session on September 30th, and concludes on October 14th with a panel with all five of us (free if you buy the series). I’ll be auditing the other teachers’ classes, so I’ll see you in the Zooms if you do all five!
Signing off like we all did in elementary school which is to say stay cool and hope to see you in class next year!
Danielle
