When I started this newsletter a number of years ago—on TinyLetter, pre-Substack, pre-everyone has something to say on a regularly-scheduled basis (and 80% of those things appear to be how to gain followers and reach five figures in subscriber dollars or how to write/revise/sell a novel in 5 steps)—I promised myself I’d only write it if I had something to say. I stuck with that, more or less, even as I moved to a schedule, even as I turned on paid subscriptions. In my drafts folder here is a nearly-complete September newsletter, but I don’t like it; there is no there there, so to speak. A scheduling blip has made a little hole in the In Process With… lineup. I’m just settling back to my writing desk with the novel. It’s September, and my calendar is full with getting the high schoolers settled and holidays and long-arranged plans, and I need a little quiet in my interior spaces, so I’m taking the month off from here.
The archives will remain unlocked for the month, not sure about after. In addition to the purpose of the newsletter overall, I’ve been thinking a lot about subscriptions and paywalls and am sorting out various feelings and thoughts on it. I’ll let you know if anything changes when my brain settles, which I hope to be in October, and which could very well be me returning same as it ever was. I’ll pause subscriptions if this goes on for more than a month.
Till then, take care of yourselves, read books, write what needs to be written, and talk soon.
Danielle
